Magnus Rönnlid, born 1969, is head of subtitling at SVT, the Swedish Public Service television broadcaster (www.svt.se).
His department caters for a variety of subtitling services from news translation to live subtitling for the hard-of-hearing as well as offline translation subtitling.
Magnus holds a University degree in English and French as well as an M.Sc. in Economics and Business administration. Previously Magnus has worked as a translator from French, English, Spanish and German into Swedish within the European administration in Brussels. He has also worked as a intra-lingual subtitler at SVT.
During the five years Magnus has run the subtitling department at SVT it has increased the ratio of own-language subtitled programmes from around 40 to 75 per cent. The government regulator has been increasing the quota in steps and just recently the three year target was set to 100 per cent. An important challenge lies ahead and one way of addressing it is the development of a new subtitle production network that is currently being developed within SVT. It has high focus the possibilities offered by new collaboration based technologies, the synergies found in intra-system integration and the recycling of texts that are produced by other parts of the organisation (such as scripts, news stories etc).
