Tiina Holopainen

I received my translator training at the University of Turku, Department of Translator Training, in the 1980's. In my training, there were many practical and theoretical approaches offered to translation. I adopted the thinking of the now late Atso Vuoristo, Lecturer and one of the key founders of the Finnish translator training. Unfortunately, Atso Vuoristo never published, but I – along with many of my Finnish (AV) translator colleagues – have found his communicational and actional thinking quite comprehensive while, at the same time, reasonable in its application in both practicing and teaching (AV) translation.

Since 1990, I have been working mainly as an in-house freelance AV translator (subtitler) for YLE, the Finnish Broadcasting Company. I work from English, German and Swedish into Finnish.

Since 1997, I have been teaching AV translation, specifically subtitling, on temporary basis at the University of Turku Centre for Translation and Interpreting.

I am currently working on my Senior Thesis on subtitling as a form of translation communication, käännösviestintä, as developed by Atso Vuoristo.
